Meditation helps productivity soar

WAYNE — No one is unfamiliar with how hectic life can be both in and out of the workplace. Holiday stress, coupled with the everyday stuff of life, can knock even the best of us for a loop.

Idea Village, a Wayne-based company, is finding a way to combat some of that stress, at least the part that happens in the workplace.

The staff started meditating in October 2008, and the results, according to Khubani, have been wonderful.

"Laura comes in on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons," he said. "But she suggested it would be more powerful, and work better, if we meditated even on the days she wasn't there."

The group began to meditate each morning before the start of the work day, and within three months, saw the impact it had on both their personal and professional lives.

"Sales have increased by about 50 percent over last year, and we seem to get about four or five times the number of products presented to us that we did last year," Khubani said. "I don't know if this can all be attributed to meditation, but I definitely think it has helped."

One employee, Maryann Hrebeniuk, has found a distinct personal advantage to meditating — a significantly lower cholesterol reading.

"I was on medication for my cholesterol, and it would only go down a few points, maybe 20 at the most," she said of her 300 original reading. "After about two or three months of meditating, I went to my doctor, and she told me my level went down to 170. I was shocked, and very pleasantly surprised."

Hrebeniuk finds that meditating truly helps her job performance as well.

"In customer service, I deal with the public all day long. Sometimes, people can be less than pleasant on the phone," she said. "There are times when I will leave my desk and just do a five-minute meditation, just to clear my head and help me get over the stress of the day. I can work much better when I come back," she added.
