I am reading a book titled "The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health", by Dr. Dean Ornish.
It is a New York Times Bestseller, and Dr. Ornish has a distinguished background that includes being President and Founder of the nonprofit "Preventive Medicine Research Institutes", as well as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
What is impressive is that - in his book - he dedicates more than just a cursory mention to meditation and the benefits it provides. Some quotes from the book include:
"Techniques like...meditation give you a break from chronic stress, providing an internal oasis that you can experience anywhere. Stress is most likely to cause disease when it's chronic and unrelenting. Even your heart, which beats steadily, rests in between contractions."
"Practicing meditation...on a regular basis gives us more power to control how we react to these external events. As a patient once said to me after learning meditation...Well, the situation didn't change, but I did."
"Focusing energy increases its power. When you can concentrate better, you can perform better - in school, in business, in sports."
"Even a minute of meditation each day can make a meaningful difference."
"The improvements in coronary artery blockages due to stress-management techniques appear to be independent of changes in diet."
